Steamworks Berkeley

In 1976 a group of bathhouse aficionados and investors came together and bought the Mayan Baths in Berkeley. Steamworks was born. The club had 60 private rooms, a TV lounge, steam room, sun lamps, a gym, a water massage tub and "an exciting wrestling arena with suspended floor".

Over the years Steamworks has evolved: adding a dry sauna, removing the dry sauna, adding rooms, removing rooms, building an in-ground hot tub, adding video rooms, large, x-large and fetish equipped rooms, expanding the gym, overhauling the video system from Super 8 to VHS, VHS to DVD, DVD to more than 18 channels of completely digital porn, building a DJ booth, building a new DJ booth, and adding top DJs to play our special brand of sexy music. Always an important component has been and is our commitment to sexual health. Our award winning STD/STI & HIV Testing, Education and Outreach program brings in community partners from the Berkeley Free Clinic, Alameda County Department of Public Health, Asian Health Services and La Clinica de La Raza targeting both the majority and minority populations of Steamworks' customers.

We are now in the midst of a nearly 2 million dollar renovation which will usher in our 40th year, rebuilding all bathrooms, increasing the number of douche stations from 2 to 4, adding new water-saver and rain showers, new state-of-the-art laundry facilities, a new steam room, an ADA accessible entry, a new canteen, some new private rooms and yes - we are adding a dry sauna, again.

We spent almost 2 years in the design and drawings phase of the project, working with our architect Barbara Winslow of JSW/D Architects in Berkeley, who also helped us select our Contractor, Vila Construction. Just getting contractors to work in this environment can be a challenge but Vila has been super professional and a joy to work with.

The renovations began in January and are expected to be finished shortly before the end of the year, with a few components being held off until next spring. It is always tricky to do renovations on an open, operating business - especially one that never closes and and usually busy - and not to destroy the customer experience - but so far we've maintained the support of our incredible customers. We are very involved in the design, development and build of our club - who knows better than us what works for our customers.

We are not only bathhouse operators - we are bathhouse aficionados.
